Long-Term Tree-Ring Response to Drought and Frost in Two Pinus halepensis Populations Growing under Contrasting Environmental Conditions in Peninsular Italy

چکیده

Pinus halepensis dominates coastal to mountain areas throughout the Mediterranean Basin. Its growth plasticity, based on polycyclic shoot formation and dynamic cambial activity, tolerance extreme drought exceptional frosts, allows it colonize a vast array of environments. We used tree-rings from codominant pines compare lifespan, rates, age size distribution in typical (i.e., prolonged drought, occasional low-intensity fires) vs. inland hilly moister conditions, recurrent frosts) population. BAI trends, growth-limiting climate factors tree-ring anatomical anomalies were analyzed considering differences phenology obtained multispectral satellite images. The species maximum lifespan was 100–125 years. Mortality mainly due fire coast, or heart-rot site. Populations differed productivity, which maintained over time despite recent warming. Site conditions affected growing season dynamics, control ring by summer winter cold frequency anomalies. Recurrent frost rings, associated with temperatures below −10 °C, occurred only at confirmed its remarkable plasticity diverse variable environmental conditions. ability survive events sustain productivity adaptability change as well mountains.

Differential drought tolerance in tree populations from contrasting elevations

To predict the ecological consequences of climate change for a widely distributed tree species, it is essential to develop a deep understanding of the ecophysiological responses of populations from contrasting climates to varied soil water availabilities. In the present study, we focused on Pinus tabuliformis, one of the most economically and ecologically important tree species in China. In a g...

Timing of False Ring Formation in Pinus halepensis and Arbutus unedo in Southern Italy: Outlook from an Analysis of Xylogenesis and Tree-Ring Chronologies

Mediterranean tree rings are characterized by intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) due to partly climate-driven cambial activity. IADFs are used as structural signals to gain information on relations between environmental conditions and eco-physiological processes during xylogenesis, with intra-annual resolution. To reach an unbiased synchronization of the IADF position within tree rings a...

Missing Rings in Pinus halepensis – The Missing Link to Relate the Tree-Ring Record to Extreme Climatic Events

Climate predictions for the Mediterranean Basin include increased temperatures, decreased precipitation, and increased frequency of extreme climatic events (ECE). These conditions are associated with decreased tree growth and increased vulnerability to pests and diseases. The anatomy of tree rings responds to these environmental conditions. Quantitatively, the width of a tree ring is largely de...

Aggregated Cones in Pinus Halepensis

Aggregated female cones were found in 192 Pinus halepensis trees growing in 54 populations in Israel, in habitats of vastly differing ecological conditions. All of these trees also carried normal (1-5 in a whorl) female cones. The number of aggregates per tree varied from one to several dozen. Some of the trees formed aggregates every year, after the first year of aggregate formation, while oth...
